Day 8: Bavaria or Bust

Well, we finally got out of Switzerland today and went back up into Germany. It was a long and tiring drive, but we did things to pass time.
Before crossing the German border, we stopped in the Appenzell region of Switzerland. Here, we stopped for lunch and did a little bit of shopping before getting back on the road. From there, we would cut through Austria and enter into the Bavaria region of Germany. This was a region that was once an independent kingdom prior to Germany's unification in 1871. It still serves as a big cultural region for the country today.
That evening, we arrived in the bustling Bavarian capital of Munich. We got to see a glimpse of what it had on our way to dinner, which we had at the Haufrauhaus. This was the Bavarian king's private brewery in the day, but now it is an open restaurant and beerhouse for all. No, we did not have beer, but we did have amazing food, like schnitzels and gigantic pretzels.
After dinner, Matthias took us on a walking tour of the city. Here, we got to see some government buildings, which included the main building for one of Germany's leading political parties. We also got to see a nighttime view of the city as well as an old statue of Maximilian I. We did take a long way back to the hotel and we were tired by the end, but it was pretty neat to see it all. Plus, we would be here for one more day, so it's not like we had to see everything.

  1. I really enjoyed our walking tour. It was nice of Mattias to offer that to us. He said he goes on a walk like that every night after dinner.
